bayernhafen Nürnberg has linked the three modes of transport – road, rail and inland waterway – since its foundation. The ‘fourth infrastructure’ – data – has long been of great importance. Now the data link in bayernhafen Nürnberg will receive yet another boost: around 48 km of fibre-optic cable delivering super-fast Internet with speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. Construction work on the new fibre-optic network is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2018.

The development of the fibre-optic network is being carried out as part of a program initiated by the Free State of Bavaria with the aim of gradually expanding high-performance broadband networks in Bavaria. The Free State of Bavaria is providing up to €1.5 billion in funding in order to achieve transmission rates of at least 50 Mbit/s.

At the official launch of the fibre-optic network expansion work on 17 November 2017 at bayernhafen Nürnberg, Bavaria’s Minister of Finance, Regional Development and Homeland, Dr. Markus Söder, said: “A high-capacity broadband infrastructure is a decisive factor for securing the commitment of business enterprises to the business location. The launch of the fibre-optic network expansion is the first step from megabit to gigabit and towards a viable digital infrastructure. With government support, over 140 commercial sites can be supplied with direct fibre-optic connections right into the building, providing the companies operating from these sites with access to an Internet connection that transfers data at the speed of light.”

“The provision of ultra-fast broadband networks is a prerequisite for the future viability of industrial and commercial areas and, indeed, for the business location of Nuremberg as a whole,” said the Spokesman on Economic Affairs of the City of Nuremberg, Dr. Michael Fraas. “The extremely high fibre-optic transmission rates will add to the many attractive benefits of doing business from bayernhafen Nürnberg. The aim is for the business location of Nuremberg to provide companies with the best possible conditions for competing successfully in the global marketplace.” Sixty percent of the funding for the expansion of the Bavarian broadband program will be provided by the Free State of Bavaria, with the remaining forty percent coming from the City of Nuremberg.

Joachim Zimmermann, the Chief Executive Officer of bayernhafen Gruppe, and Alexander Ochs, Managing Director of the operating company of bayernhafen Nürnberg, Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH, emphasised the importance of connectivity: “We view ourselves as connection experts. The connection to the broadband network will strengthen not only bayernhafen Nürnberg as a business location, but also significantly boost the companies that do business from there. Of course, bayernhafen Gruppe is also committed to closing the gaps in the development of fibre-optic network connections at its other business locations.”
